For those of us still checking this blog space, a question from young Oliver (who is developing a taste for capital r rock music), which I thought worthy of group input:

What is the best / coolest / greatest guitar rock riff of all time?   Points for obscurity and depth of knowledge.....no points for Smoke on the Water.

Monsieur Gaines, looking forward to a post on an artist we should all dive into, and trusting that the bed rest isn't too horrible.

Opening riff on 'The Ocean' by Led Zeppelin. Sampled by the Beasties on 'She's Crafty'.

I'm going to have to go with the riff that most dramatically blew me away the first time I heard it, which was Layla. On the more obscure side, I love Mark Knopfler's riff in the Randy Newman song, "It's Money that Matters".

I have to go with Mssr. Gaines...layla is the one that does it for me... (I assume you are asking for short sweet hard rock riffs...not longer guitar runs like , say Like a Hurricane...too long to qualify...)
after layla, would come 'dont fear the reaper' , hells bells and you really got me all tied for second untill I think of some others

Input from Olly on riffs: Heartbreaker and Black Dog by led zep and Back in Black by ACDC.

Input from me: let's not forget the earliest perhaps greatest guitar riff song of all "Satisfaction". Other faves include Rebel Rebel. Zep's, Bring it on Home (fantastic riff to kick off the second half), DayTripper (a riff that every newbie guitar player learns), REM's Driver 8, and finally, the coolest, most unusual riff song (and pop single, frankly) of all time Eight Miles High!
